Why is anyone surprised? India had been aligned with SU and after the collapse of SU with Russia for some time now, partly as a consequence of the cold war where the US supported Pakistan (their biggest regional rival) and India probably did not want to be in any kind of alloance with their former colonizer (UK) (speculating about the second part). Most of India’s military gear was and still is SU/Rusaian made, they would have had to maintain some sort of a relationship until they changed over most of their military gear. This is nothing new, in their words this is just a regional conflict for them. Add to that, that Modi is a borderline fascist and birds of a feather flock together. 

I would add that Biden admin had a decent plan to pull them away from Russia with the oil price cap that India benefitted from, but Trump seems to flushed the whole thing down the toilet with his 50% tarrifs, only bringing the two even closer.

USA just did a military exercise with Bangladesh which shares majority of its border with India. And called for strengthening it's army. 

So within days of this, India joined zapad military exercise with Russia..

This wouldn’t be just an issue for India but for the “West” as if Chinese (future/current opponent) equipment is capable of downing Western jets and is familiarising itself with these jets , weaknesses etc, it is a big problem. Unless one of two things happened 

1. Report is incorrect 
2. Pilot error led to an easy shoot down therefore no flaws in the equipment were exposed.

This is still a report on he said, she said. There is too much misinformation going around and this is the reason that India has taken videos of these attacks as proofs this time around. Unless we have something that evident, claims saying "X fighter jets were shot down" will still sound suspicious at best.
